How do I measure a shell that my hermit crab is still wearing?
Last Updated: 09/13/2009
You can use the bottom portion of a caliper to measure the opening size of the shell your crab is currently in.

The image below shows how to hold the caliper. The measurement is read below the zero on the sliding piece. This crab is wearing a 1 1/2" Round Opening Shell.

The next size up for him would be a 1 5/8" Round Opening Shell or 1 7/8" D-Shaped Opening Shell.
